Mbeere residents up in arms over diversion of river

Transport was on Monday paralysed alongside the busy Embu-Kiritiri-Kanyonyo street on the Machang’a space after locals blocked the street protesting the diversion of the Thiba River upstream within the neighbouring Kirinyaga County.

The irate mob lamented that the diversion of the river in Kirinyaga to ostensibly replenish Thiba Dam and irrigate rice fields had denied them entry to their solely supply of home and irrigation water.

The street remained impassible for the higher a part of the day after the demonstrators barricaded it with rocks, tree branches and stumps.

It took the intervention of Governor Cecily Mbarire who was heading to Kiambere Ward to launch the desiltation programme of water pans forward of the lengthy rains season for normalcy to be restored.

“We’re saying sufficient is sufficient and we is not going to relent till the river is unblocked and water begins flowingly usually,” Stephen Nyaga, one of many demonstrators, stated.
