The Worldwide Olympic Committee (IOC) is taking its subsequent steps into esports competitions, and it’s including chess and Simply Dance to the combination.
In June, the IOC will host Olympic Esports Week, which expands upon the Olympic Digital Sequence it put on in 2021 with some new occasions. Just like the Olympic Digital Sequence, Olympic Esports Week will concentrate on digital representations of bodily actions. Whereas which means you received’t see any Overwatch 2 gold medalists, the IOC is including some entries to the lineup that adhere much less to the standard idea of “sport.”
New for Olympic Esports Week are archery, tennis, tae kwon do, Simply Dance (Ubisoft’s hit dancing franchise), and chess, which can sit alongside returning competitions in motorsport (by way of Gran Turismo), biking, baseball, and crusing. Chess, to me, feels significantly notable given how huge it has become on Twitch, and I feel there may very well be an enormous draw to watching the struggle for the primary Olympic esports chess champion.
Olympic Esports Week technically kicks off at present, March 1st, with preliminary qualifiers. The competitions will conclude with an in-person occasion that’s set to happen in Singapore from June twenty second to twenty fifth.
